The goal for this discussion is to initially enhance awareness of the potential pitfalls of being relentlessly connected to the digital world via increasingly intrusive conduits-including the ubiquitous Smartphone. The challenges of navigating this rapidly advancing technological landscape can be daunting and the negative impact that a hyper-connected society can have on recovery and mental health will be explored. Additionally, it will be helpful to review the benefits of utilizing technology-based assessment and intervention strategies in multiple domains including cognition, emotion, functional capacity and skills training. Many of these options are evidence based, with ongoing attempts to provide updated qualified research that is validated in clinical settings.
- Review the scope, implications, and current utilization trends of technologies and the internet.
- Identify potential risks of a digitally hyper-connected society as they relate to mental health and recovery.
- Summarize the benefits of technology-based assessment and intervention strategies.
Dr. Anish John is the Medical Director at the PSI.Health in Chicago IL where he oversees care for patients in the partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient programs. He is board-certified in General and Addiction Psychiatry (ABPN) and Addiction Medicine (ABPM) and has an adjunct faculty appointment as Assistant Professor at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Dr. John has an active interest in teaching and is involved in the ongoing training of Psychiatry residents, Addiction Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine fellows. Dr. John has research interests that include the interface between digital technology and addiction, biomarkers and neurobehavioral predictors for recovery, the assessment and treatment of impaired health care practitioners and utilizing neuro-modulation techniques to influence the outcome of psychiatric/addictive disorders.

The Perils and Benefits of Technology for Mental Health, 6841, is approved by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program to be offered by Wellbrook Recovery as an individual course. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. ACE course approval period: 09/11/26-09/11/28. Social workers completing this course receive 1.5 general continuing education credits.
