The number of deaths has varied widely from year to year, though there is a general upward trend in all three counties since 2014. But the number of opioid-related hospitalizations is the most telling. In 2021, Calumet, Outagamie, and Winnebago Counties recorded 9, 69, and 83 opioid-related hospitalizations, respectively. This shows that, while the number of cases is quite low, the ratio of deaths to hospitalizations is alarmingly high. [2]

Generally, Appleton does a better job of combatting substance abuse than many other cities in Wisconsin, particularly when it comes to opioids. This data shows that, while Appleton residents are not immune to drug and alcohol abuse, the city and surrounding counties generally record more promising figures than the rest of the state.
