Drug and Alcohol Rehab for Appleton, Wisconsin

Historical Appleton and substance abuse

Appleton sits at the crossroads of Outagamie, Calumet, and Winnebago counties. While this may not seem that important, it has actually had a drastic impact on the city’s ability to track and combat substance abuse. This is because most cities in Wisconsin rely on county-level data to understand the extent of drug and alcohol abuse in their respective areas. Additionally, many cities depend entirely on county and state-level programs to fight addiction. As a result, the city of Appleton has struggled to take control of its substance abuse crisis with hard data and local initiatives.

But this doesn’t mean that Appleton is worse off than other cities in Wisconsin. In fact, Appleton fairs better than most other cities in the region when it comes to deaths caused by alcohol and opioids. Nonetheless, the inability to accurately track hospitalizations and deaths within the city limits has made it harder for Appleton to contain the growing number of cases.

In spite of these barriers, accessing help in Appleton does not have to be time-consuming. Thanks to high-quality residential rehabs like Wellbrook Recovery, residents of Appleton have a place to recover from addiction that is safe, comfortable, and effective.

However, if you’re unsure about the prospect of checking into rehab, you’re not alone. It can be a difficult path that takes a great deal of courage. In any case, be sure to continue reading so that you can learn more about substance abuse in Appleton, Wisconsin, and the resources available to help you on your journey.

"As the rest of the state struggles to contain the opioid epidemic, Appleton has few cases in relation to its population. However, the state of alcohol abuse in Appleton is largely on par with the rest of the state. Alcohol related deaths are almost double opioid related deaths."

Substance Abuse In Appleton Information

Appleton has a population of approximately 75,000 people, making it one of the largest cities in the area. Since Appleton is spread out across three counties, evaluating the severity of the city’s substance abuse crisis is complex. However, based on data coming out of Outagamie, Calumet, and Winnebago counties, we can get a clearer picture of how substance abuse is affecting the residents of Appleton.

According to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Outagamie recorded 53 alcohol-related deaths in 2022. Calumet and Winnebago recorded 14 and 80 alcohol-related deaths, respectively, over the same time period. While Calumet County also recorded relatively low numbers of alcohol-related hospitalizations, Outagamie and Winnebago both recorded similarly higher numbers of alcohol-related emergency room and inpatient hospital visits. [1]

Opioid data is similar for all three counties. Calumet had so few opioid-related deaths that the data for recent years was unavailable, while Outagamie and Winnebago saw 26 and 31 opioid-related deaths, respectively, in 2021. The number of deaths has varied widely from year to year, though there is a general upward trend in all three counties since 2014. But the number of opioid-related hospitalizations is the most telling. In 2021, Calumet, Outagamie, and Winnebago Counties recorded 9, 69, and 83 opioid-related hospitalizations, respectively. This shows that, while the number of cases is quite low, the ratio of deaths to hospitalizations is alarmingly high. [2]

Substance Addiction in Appleton Vs. the State of Wisconsin

Generally, Appleton does a better job of combatting substance abuse than many other cities in Wisconsin, particularly when it comes to opioids. As the rest of the state struggles to contain the opioid epidemic, Appleton has few cases in relation to its population. However, the state of alcohol abuse in Appleton is largely on par with the rest of the state. Wisconsin is the worst state in the nation for binge drinking, and Appleton records hundreds of alcohol-related deaths and emergency room visits every year. [3]

However, the average rates of alcohol and opioid abuse at the county level are far below state figures. For example, Wisconsin sees an average of 55 alcohol-related deaths per 100,000 residents. Both Calumet and Outagamie fall well below this average, while Winnebago sees 56 deaths out of 100,000, slightly above the state average.

With opioid-related deaths, all three counties fall below the state average. Wisconsin sees 24.6 opioid-related deaths per 100,000 residents, while Calumet, Outagamie, and Winnebago see 7.7, 14.1, and 18.1, respectively. This data shows that, while Appleton residents are not immune to drug and alcohol abuse, the city and surrounding counties generally record more promising figures than the rest of the state.

How Appleton Fights Substance Abuse & Promotes Recovery

Despite being a relatively large city, most of Appleton’s efforts to combat substance abuse are managed at the state and county levels. In Outagamie County, the Outagamie County Crisis Unit helps reduce overdose deaths and makes life-saving resources more accessible. Calumet County records extremely low instances of drug and alcohol abuse, thanks in part to initiatives like the Calumet County Underage Drinking Diversion Program, the Community Support Program, and the Comprehensive Community Service Program. Lastly, Winnebago County offers several programs to address substance abuse in a variety of ways, like the LifePoint syringe disposal program, the Breakwater Coalition, and the Overdose Fatality Review Team, as well as programs that offer free access to fentanyl test strips, Narcan, and prescription drug drop-offs.

As a complement to local programs, Wisconsin runs the State Council on Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse (SCAODA), which educates people of all ages on the dangers of addiction.

Drug and Alcohol Addiction Statistics For Appleton, WI
