This interactive training, led by therapist Dora Holliday, LPCC, CCTP, ATR-P, explores the role of the Window of Tolerance in addiction treatment and emotional regulation. Participants will gain a practical understanding of how the nervous system responds to stress and trauma, how dysregulation impacts substance use and recovery, and why many individuals rely on substances to create a “false” sense of stability or regulation.

Through a trauma-informed lens, this course will examine the relationship between nervous system arousal, emotional overwhelm, and coping behaviors commonly seen in addiction treatment settings. Attendees will learn how to recognize signs of hyperarousal and hypoarousal, help clients build awareness of their emotional and physiological states, and introduce practical interventions that support distress tolerance, grounding, mindfulness, and self-regulation.

This training is designed to provide clinicians with immediately applicable tools to better support clients struggling with addiction, trauma, and emotional dysregulation while fostering greater resilience, safety, and therapeutic engagement in treatment.

Participants will be able to describe a  basic understanding of the window of tolerance, and name at least 3 symptoms of nervous system arousal.

Participants will describe at least one way the window of tolerance is relevant to addiction recovery.

Participants will learn at least one approach to utilize with clients in treatment to improve understanding of symptoms and distress tolerance.

Participants will be introduced to the importance of resourcing and provided examples.
