Drug and Alcohol Rehab for Kenosha, Wisconsin

Historical Kenosha and substance abuse

Kenosha is one of the most beautiful and picturesque cities in Wisconsin. Located on the southwestern shore of Lake Michigan, Kenosha is the county seat of Kenosha County and the 4th-largest city in the state by population. Though Kenosha is primarily known by locals for its waterfront scenery, the city has a long and storied history.

Prior to its settlement by Europeans, Kenosha, like many cities throughout Wisconsin, was home to Native American tribes like the Potawatomi and the Ojibwe. In fact, there’s evidence that ancient tribes were living in the area more than 13,000 years ago. However, the city’s contemporary history generally begins with the influx of European-descended settlers in the early 1800s. The Western Emigration Company first arrived in the 1830s, led by John Bullen Jr. During the early stages of its settlement, the city went through several name changes before ultimately landing on Kenosha in 1850.

By this time, Kenosha had already been established as an important shipping port. Throughout the remainder of the 19th Century, Kenosha experienced substantial industrial growth. It became known as a hub for manufacturing, which only advanced with the invention of the automobile. Two of the biggest boosts to the local economy came with the arrival of the Simmons Mattress Company in 1870 and the Nash Motors Company in 1916. Though Kenosha is not the major auto manufacturer it once was, it oversaw the production of millions of automobiles throughout the 20th Century.

Today, Kenosha is a relatively peaceful city that combines small-town charm with big-city amenities. As of the latest census, Kenosha has a population of just over 99,000 people. The city has seen continued growth in recent years, as well as tourism, thanks in large part to attractions like the Kenosha Public Museum, the Civil War Museum, and the Dinosaur Discovery Museum. Due to its location on the coast of Lake Michigan, Kenosha is also a popular destination for fishing, boating, and watersports. Kenosha even has several popular nature reserves, including Petrifying Springs Park and Kenosha Sand Dunes.

Sadly, a combination of factors has caused the otherwise wholesome town to experience higher rates of crime, economic uncertainty, and addiction. The COVID-19 pandemic saw thousands of local residents lose their jobs, while the highly publicized shootings led to mass protests, looting, and hundreds of arrests. Since then, the substance abuse crisis has only gotten worse in Kenosha.

But it’s not all grim news. If you live in Kenosha and are struggling to get help, Wellbrook Recovery of Wisconsin is nearby. We can help you achieve sobriety and leave behind addiction for good.

Even if you’re not ready for rehab yet, you should still reach out to us to learn more. In the meantime, be sure to learn more about the local addiction crisis to see how drugs and alcohol are affecting the people of Kenosha.

"The county recorded an additional 12 deaths from cocaine overdose. In the same year, Kenosha saw an astounding 110 deaths related to alcohol, a 25% increase from 2020. It is also estimated that the city of Kenosha saw 96 of the 110 alcohol-related deaths in the county that year. "

Substance Abuse In Kenosha Information

Many of the statistics related to substance abuse are recorded at the county level in Kenosha. With a population of over 168,000 people, Kenosha County sees hundreds of overdose deaths every single year. The city of Kenosha has a population of approximately 100,000 people and accounts for about 60% of the county population.

Substance abuse remains a serious public health concern in Kenosha County, with both alcohol and opioid use contributing significantly to emergency room visits and fatalities. Alcohol-related emergencies have steadily risen in recent years, signaling a persistent pattern of high-risk drinking behaviors in the community. Between 2019 and 2023, the number of alcohol-related ER visits consistently exceeded 900 annually, reaching over 1,100 in 2023. During that same period, alcohol-related deaths climbed as well, with more than 100 deaths reported each year since 2021. These numbers suggest that alcohol misuse in Kenosha is not only widespread but also increasingly deadly, placing strain on healthcare resources and reflecting deeper issues within the county’s behavioral health landscape.

Opioid misuse has also had a deadly and unpredictable impact on Kenosha County. While the number of opioid-related emergency room visits fluctuated from year to year, visits have remained high overall, with notable spikes in 2018 and 2021. Opioid-related deaths have shown a similarly volatile pattern, peaking at 45 in both 2017 and 2023, and hitting a low of 24 in 2020. The data reveals that despite temporary reductions in fatalities, the overall threat of opioids persists, with significant year-to-year variation suggesting the influence of changes in drug availability, community outreach, or treatment access. Taken together, the trends in alcohol and opioid-related incidents point to an ongoing substance abuse crisis in Kenosha that demands a coordinated, long-term public health response.

Substance Addiction in Kenosha Vs. the State of Wisconsin

From 2019 to 2023, Kenosha consistently had lower alcohol-related ER visit rates than the Wisconsin state average from 2019 through 2020, but began to exceed the state rate in 2021 and 2022, before dropping slightly below the state again in 2023. This shift suggests a worsening trend in Kenosha’s alcohol-related acute incidents during the middle of the five-year span. In terms of alcohol-related deaths, Kenosha’s rate was higher than the state’s in four out of five years, with 2019 being the only exception. The consistent elevation in death rates compared to the state average indicates that while ER visit rates have fluctuated, the severity or fatal outcomes of alcohol misuse in Kenosha remain disproportionately high and may require targeted intervention.

However, with regards to opioids, from 2019 to 2023, Kenosha experienced significantly higher opioid overdose death rates than the Wisconsin state average, with Kenosha’s rate more than doubling the state’s in several years. For example, in 2023, Kenosha had a death rate of 4.55 per 10,000 compared to Wisconsin’s 2.4, and in 2021, the rates were 4.34 and 2.42 respectively. ER visit rates for opioid-related incidents were also consistently higher in Kenosha during most of this period. In 2021, Kenosha recorded an ER visit rate of 9.29 per 10,000 compared to the state’s 5.28, and this trend continued through 2023. These figures suggest that Kenosha has faced a substantially greater burden from the opioid crisis than the state as a whole, both in terms of acute medical emergencies and fatal overdoses.

How Kenosha Fights Substance Abuse & Promotes Recovery

Many of Kenosha’s programs to reduce substance abuse are focused on younger residents. For example, the Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs (ATOD) Awareness Campaigns visit schools to educate youth on the dangers of alcohol and drug addiction. The Concerned Citizen’s Coalition also manages several programs to help at-risk youth, including the Teen Task Force. To combat the addiction crisis more directly, the city utilizes the Kenosha County Opioid Task Force, the Medication for Addiction Treatment (MAT) Program, and the Narcan Distribution Program. [4] In addition to these local programs, Wisconsin runs the State Council on Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse (SCAODA), which is a program to help educate teens and adults on drug abuse. Hope Council of Kenosha provides education, prevention, intervention, and referral services for substance abuse related disorders. https://www.hopecouncil.org/
