Substance Abuse In West Allis, WI Information

West Allis is a suburb of Milwaukee and one of the largest cities in Milwaukee County, with a population of over 60,000. However, Milwaukee County has a much larger population of over 928,000, and most substance abuse data is collected at the county level. Consequently, it can get rather complicated to calculate and account for the data specific to West Allis. Nonetheless, evaluating the county-level databases can help shed light on the current state of substance abuse in the city.

According to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Milwaukee County recorded 607 deaths caused by alcohol in 2022. Like most counties throughout Wisconsin (and the rest of the country), the number of alcohol deaths peaked during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020 and 2021, Milwaukee County saw 687 and 699 alcohol deaths, respectively. However, the larger trend (2014-2022) shows that average annual alcohol deaths have increased in Milwaukee County by roughly 49%. [1]

The rise in opioid-related deaths in Milwaukee County has been even more troubling. Between 2014 and 2019, the number of opioid deaths rose from 212 to 326, representing an average annual increase of 10.7%. Between 2019 and 2021, the same figure rose from 326 to 522, representing an average annual increase of about 30%. To give a little more perspective on the severity of the situation, the population of Milwaukee County has declined by about 30,000 since 2014. So, even if the number of deaths had remained constant over the same time period, it would still reflect a modest increase in the total number of opioid abuse cases. However, since the number of deaths has increased dramatically, it shows that the opioid crisis has gotten much, much worse, in spite of a declining population in Milwaukee County. [2]

Naturally, prescription opioids and alcohol are not the only substances being abused in West Allis and the rest of Milwaukee County. In fact, Milwaukee County has some of the highest rates of deaths in the state involving cocaine and heroin. Comparatively, meth causes few deaths in Milwaukee County when accounting for its large population. [3]

" Some recent findings related to overdoses and deaths in West Allis, Wisconsin, are: Annual Overdoses: 581. Alcohol-Related Deaths: 83. Opioid-Related Deaths: 75. Non-Opioid Drug-Related Deaths: 12. "

It’s extremely important to remember that the aforementioned figures represent all of Milwaukee County, of which West Allis is a relatively small part. In fact, West Allis only accounts for about 6.4% of the county population. And while the city of Milwaukee generally has the highest number of hospitalizations, overdoses, and deaths as a result of substance abuse, West Allis still contributes to these statistics each and every year. Based on preliminary data from the city, it is estimated that about 14% of all drug and alcohol-related deaths recorded in Milwaukee County originated in the city of West Allis.

Substance Addiction in West Allis Vs. the State of Wisconsin

While West Allis accounts for a sizeable percentage of the hospitalizations and deaths in Milwaukee County, the entire county is among the worst in the state for substance abuse. Currently, Wisconsin is the worst state in the nation for alcohol abuse, with roughly 1 in 4 Wisconsin adults engaging in binge drinking on a regular basis. [4] The statistics in Milwaukee County are particularly grim.

In 2021, Milwaukee County recorded 8,146 alcohol emergency room visits and 7,597 alcohol inpatient hospital visits, making it the worst county in the state for either figure. One positive consideration is that, while Milwaukee County records the highest number of alcohol hospitalizations in the state by far, it does not record the most deaths. This is largely due to the fact that clinics and detox facilities are readily accessible. In any case, Milwaukee County still recorded an average of 73.5 alcohol deaths per 100,000 residents in 2021, compared to a statewide average of 55. This still only made Milwaukee County the 10th worst county out of 72 counties in the state for the total number of alcohol-related deaths in that time period. [5]

Milwaukee County is also worse off than other counties in Wisconsin in its efforts to combat the opioid crisis. In 2021, Milwaukee County recorded an annual average of 54.9 opioid deaths per 100,000 residents, compared to a statewide average of 24.6. This means that people struggling with opioid addiction in West Allis and other parts of Milwaukee County are twice as likely to experience a fatal overdose than people in other parts of the state. And while opioid hospitalizations are in decline from their peak in 2017, Milwaukee County still sees a lot more opioid cases than other counties. In 2021, Milwaukee County recorded 77 opioid hospitalizations per 100,000 residents, compared to just 53.7 in all of Wisconsin. [6]

How West Allis Fights Substance Abuse & Promotes Recovery

West Allis offers various programs and initiatives to try to stem the rising tide of substance abuse cases in the region. The West Allis officail website has a dedicated resources section for Substance Abuse. The West Allis Hope Walk provides an uplifting path to connect with nature, practice mindfulness, and promote positive mental health practices. Signs in seven of the City parks help raise awareness about mental health and spread hope serving as a reminder that an individual is never alone in their struggle and help is always available. Similarly, the WAWM Heroin/Opiate Task Force works to reduce opioid overdoses in the city through education and awareness initiatives. As part of its Community Help Improvement Plan (CHIP), West Allis has brought more programs into schools to help teach kids about the dangers of drugs and alcohol from a young age.

West Allis also depends on some of the programs and initiatives available at the county and state levels. For example, the Milwaukee Health Department provides resources to teach people how to use Narcan in the event of an opioid overdose, as well as instructional videos on how to use fentanyl test strips. As a complement to local programs, Wisconsin runs the State Council on Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse (SCAODA), which administers dozens of programs and initiatives across the state, particularly in areas with high overdose rates (like West Allis). Lastly, many residents seek out help from quality inpatient rehab clinics like Wellbrook Recovery.
