Drug and Alcohol Rehab for Mequon, Wisconsin

Historical Mequon and substance abuse

Bordered on the south by the Milwaukee River, Mequon is a sleepy little city located in the heart of Ozaukee County. It may not be the largest city in Wisconsin by population, but it is the third-largest by land area, with lots of nature trails and forests to explore. Plus, Mequon has a thriving economy and one of the highest average household incomes in the state. And with a relatively low crime rate, Mequon makes for a great place to live and raise a family.

But as you might have guessed, there is a dark side to Mequon that isn’t discussed often enough. While it is a beautiful city surrounded by nature, Mequon has a history of struggling with substance abuse. Fortunately, if you live in Mequon and you’re currently fighting addiction, you’re not alone. By choosing to get help at Wellbrook Recovery, you can cleanse yourself of toxic substances and look forward to a brighter future, free of drugs and alcohol.

And while we strongly encourage anyone with a substance use disorder to reach out today, we also understand that you might want to learn more about substance abuse in Mequon. It is a vitally important issue, and understanding how it impacts your community could be just the thing you need to begin the recovery process. Continue reading to learn more about substance abuse in Mequon, Wisconsin, and the resources available to help you on your journey.

Substance Abuse In Mequon Information

The city of Mequon accounts for nearly a third of Ozaukee County, making it the largest city in the region. As of 2021, Mequon boasted a population of 25,200, compared to over 92,000 in all of Ozaukee County. Since substance abuse data is collected at the county level, the best way to understand the ongoing crisis in Mequon is to evaluate the numbers coming out of Ozaukee. It’s also important to note that, despite being just a part of Ozaukee County, Mequon accounts for more than half of all substance abuse hospitalizations and deaths in the region.

"When it comes to opioids, Mequon and the rest of Ozaukee County had been seeing deaths rise at a very fast pace. Post-pandemic and in just 5 years, the number of opioid deaths increased by 360%. But while Ozaukee County still sees a higher rate of opioid deaths than more than half of the counties in Wisconsin, it still falls below the state average."

Ozaukee County has experienced a steady and concerning burden from alcohol-related harm over the past five years. Alcohol-related deaths rose from 28 in 2019 to a peak of 40 in 2021, remaining high through 2023 with only a slight decline. Similarly, alcohol-related emergency room visits have increased sharply, from 910 in 2019 to 1,147 by 2023. These rising ER visit rates, reaching over 123 per 10,000 residents in 2023, indicate a growing strain on local health resources and reflect the persistent nature of alcohol misuse in the county.

There has been a far more consistent upward trend in the number of opioid deaths in Ozaukee County. Between 2014 and 2021, the number of annual opioid deaths tripled from 6 to 18. However, this trend is strange considering that the county records some of the lowest numbers of opioid hospitalizations in the state. The disparity suggests that many opioid users in Ozaukee County are either unwilling or unable to access professional medical assistance when they need it the most.

And while Mequon records very low instances of meth use, other street drugs like cocaine and heroin have become increasingly commonplace. These drugs are most dangerous when taken simultaneously, as illustrated by the fact that more than half of all drug deaths in the state of Wisconsin involve multiple substances. Though there is little data to show how many deaths in Mequon or Ozaukee County involve multi-drug cocktails, preliminary research suggests that at least 1 out of every 4 overdoses in the region is caused by a combination of substances.

Substance Addiction in Mequon Vs. the State of Wisconsin

When compared to state averages, Ozaukee County consistently shows higher rates of both alcohol-related deaths and emergency room visits. While Wisconsin as a whole saw alcohol death rates between 4.49 and 5.65 per 10,000 residents from 2019 to 2023, Ozaukee’s rates, though slightly lower, remained closely aligned—ranging from 3.13 to 4.32 during the same period. The disparity is more pronounced in emergency room visits: Ozaukee’s ER rate climbed from 101.57 to 123.32 per 10,000, nearly doubling the state average each year. This consistent overrepresentation suggests that alcohol misuse in Ozaukee may be more acute or lead to more frequent medical intervention than in other parts of Wisconsin.

When it comes to opioids, Mequon and the rest of Ozaukee County are seeing deaths rise at a very fast pace. In just 5 years, the number of opioid deaths increased by 360%. But while Ozaukee County still sees a higher rate of opioid deaths than more than half of the counties in Wisconsin, it still falls below the state average. In 2021, Wisconsin recorded an average of 24.6 opioid deaths per 100,000 residents, compared to just 20.4 in Ozaukee County. However, if the current trends are any indication and no action is taken to curb access to opioids, Ozaukee County is expected to surpass the state average within the next few years. [6]

How Mequon Fights Substance Abuse & Promotes Recovery

Unfortunately, Mequon does not have any active programs or initiatives to help promote recovery and reduce the number of overdoses in the city. Instead, Mequon relies on county and state-level efforts. Ozaukee County keeps a directory of local treatment providers and resources that can help with detox and outpatient recovery https://www.ozaukeecounty.gov/261/Behavioral-Health. Additionally, the county helps connect people with various support groups, including GRASP (Grief Recovery After a Substance Passing).

As a complement to local programs, Wisconsin runs the State Council on Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse (SCAODA), which manages dozens of programs and initiatives across the state. Additionally, many Mequon residents seek out help from quality inpatient rehab clinics like Wellbrook Recovery.
