Drug & Alcohol Rehab Covered by UMR Insurance (Wisconsin and Ohio)

If you’re insured through UMR (United Medical Resources) and live in Wisconsin or Ohio, here’s what to know about addiction treatment coverage, network access, and how to verify your rehab benefits.

Does UMR cover inpatient addiction rehab in Wisconsin and Ohio?

Yes. UMR plans cover mental health and substance use disorder treatment in Wisconsin or Ohio. Coverage typically includes detoxification services, residential or inpatient treatment, partial hospitalization (PHP), intensive outpatient programs (IOP), and both individual and family therapy. Medication-assisted treatment is also covered in many cases when it’s clinically appropriate.

Note that UMR is not an insurance plan and does not directly provide coverage for drug and alcohol rehab. Rather, as a third-party administrator (TPA), it partners with UnitedHealthcare and other providers to provide a range of mental health services, including inpatient rehab for drug and alcohol addiction.

How do I know if my UMR plan covers inpatient rehab?

At Wellbrook Recovery, our expert admissions team will work directly with UMR to verify your benefits. We will then clearly explain your benefits to you so you can have a simple understanding of your coverage. If any copays or out-of-pocket costs apply, our team can help arrange flexible, interest-free payment plans, so finances don’t get in the way of the most important goal—recovery.

What levels of substance abuse care are covered by UMR?

Depending on your plan and eligibility, UMR covers a full range of substance abuse and mental health care.

That may include:

  • Inpatient detox and residential treatment centers, where you receive around-the-clock care in a licensed facility.
  • Partial hospitalization programs (PHP), which provide structured daytime treatment while allowing you to live at home or in sober housing. These programs usually offer about twenty hours of care per week.
  • Intensive outpatient programs (IOP), which are more flexible, with roughly nine to twelve hours of therapy per week, allowing you to maintain work or school responsibilities while in treatment.

After completing higher levels of care, outpatient therapy and aftercare programs are often available to support long-term recovery.

Is UMR accepted at all drug and alcohol rehab centers in Wisconsin and Ohio? Do I need prior authorization?

UMR is accepted by many licensed addiction treatment centers throughout Wisconsin and Ohio, but not all. For inpatient, residential, or partial hospitalization admissions, UMR typically requires prior authorization. At Wellbrook Recovery, our insurance team handles all authorizations and clinical reviews directly with UMR, making sure everything is approved before you start treatment. We want you to focus on just one thing —recovery.

What out-of-pocket costs are there with UMR rehab coverage?

Unfortunately, many programs add unexpected administrative or out-of-network fees that weren’t disclosed upfront to the patient. Wellbrook Recovery maintains a transparent pricing policy, and we will only charge you what UMR outlines as expected copays and deductibles. Any potential out-of-pocket costs are clearly reviewed during pre-admission, with generous, interest-free payment plans available when needed. We will never tack on added fees that aren’t required by insurance.

In the rare case that the insurance company doesn’t come through with an expected payment, Wellbrook Recovery honors all pre-admission agreements and will absorb the cost. We will never charge you more than you were originally quoted.

What insurance network does UMR use in Wisconsin and Ohio?

In Wisconsin and Ohio, UMR uses the UnitedHealthcare Choice Plus network, which provides broad national access to both medical and behavioral health providers. Most UMR plans also integrate Optum Behavioral Health, a division of UnitedHealth Group that manages mental health and substance use disorder services.

Through this partnership, members can access the same Choice Plus network for both medical and behavioral health care, while Optum oversees provider credentialing, authorizations, and case management for these services. This structure allows you to receive in-network addiction treatment not only in Wisconsin but also in other states, without needing to switch networks or lose coverage continuity.

What makes UMR different from standard UnitedHealthcare coverage?

UMR is not an insurance company. It’s a third-party administrator that manages health plan benefits for employers and organizations. Your plan may have custom rules, copays, or coverage levels, even though it uses UnitedHealthcare’s network.

Many UMR plans include behavioral health services that are managed through Optum Behavioral Health, which handles prior authorizations and case management for mental health and substance use care. UMR members benefit from the extensive UnitedHealthcare network while having plan details customized to their employer’s specific benefits.

Is UMR a PPO? Are out-of-network benefits available?

Most UMR-administered plans function as PPO-style plans, meaning you can access both in-network and out-of-network treatment. In-network services generally come with lower costs, while out-of-network services provide you with a wider choice of healthcare professionals and facilities. Some UMR-administered plans are in-network with Wellbrook Recovery, and others can be accepted for out-of-network coverage. Our expert team can guide you as to whether you are in-network and verify exactly what benefits you have available, whether in-network or not.

Who can enroll in UMR insurance?

UMR provides coverage through employer-sponsored health benefit plans. It administers benefits for a range of private and public employers across Wisconsin and the rest of the country. Dependents such as spouses and children up to age 26 are typically eligible for coverage under the primary member’s plan.

How can I verify my UMR substance abuse rehab benefits?

The admissions process at Wellbrook Recovery is simple and confidential. Give us a call, and our experienced insurance team will get on your case. They can verify your UMR benefits for addiction treatment, confirm what levels of care are covered, and explain and assist with any preauthorization requirements.
