Drug and Alcohol Rehab for Wauwatosa, Wisconsin

Historical Wauwatosa and substance abuse

Wauwatosa, named after the Potawatomi word for “firefly,” is a fun, vibrant city within the larger Milwaukee Metropolitan Area. Located directly west of Milwaukee (but still part of Milwaukee County), Wauwatosa is a truly wonderful place to live and raise a family. In fact, it is ranked among the best places in Wisconsin to live, thanks in large part to a great public school system and a generally high quality of life.

However, there are downsides to living in Wauwatosa. The city has seen an increase in crime over the past few years, as well as an ever-growing problem with substance abuse. Both of these issues were only exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, which caused a great deal of stress and economic uncertainty for the residents of the city. Though the worst of the pandemic is now over, many individuals and families are still fighting to recover — particularly when it comes to addiction.

Fortunately, all hope is not lost. If you or someone you love in Wauwatosa is fighting addiction, there is no need to fight alone. By choosing to get help at Wellbrook Recovery, you can cleanse yourself of toxic substances and look forward to a brighter future, free of drugs and alcohol.

It’s vitally important to seek out professional help as soon as possible, but we understand if you’re feeling apprehensive. Entering rehab is a major decision and a huge step toward recovery, and it can be quite daunting. But with rehab, you have a much better chance of recovering and avoiding relapse.

In the meantime, it’s also important to understand how substance abuse affects you, your family, your circle of friends, and your community. Continue reading to learn more about substance abuse in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, and the resources available to help you on your journey.

"Wauwatosa accounts for about 5% of the county population and about 8% of the total substance abuse hospitalizations and overdoses. Wauwatosa and the rest of Milwaukee County are among the worst in the state for substance abuse. This is especially alarming considering that Wisconsin is the worst state in the nation for alcohol abuse, with about 25% of the adult population engaging in binge drinking on a regular basis."

Substance Abuse In Wauwatosa Information

Wauwatosa boasts a population of over 48,000, which pales in comparison to the much larger Milwaukee County, which hosts roughly 928,000 people. While Wauwatosa makes up a relatively small part of the county, all of the substance abuse data for the city is collected at the county level. This can make interpreting the data a little complex. Nonetheless, understanding how substance abuse affects the entirety of Milwaukee County can also shed light on the state of addiction and substance abuse in the city of Wauwatosa.

According to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Milwaukee County recorded a staggering 607 alcohol-related deaths in 2022. This did represent a decrease from the height of the pandemic, when the county recorded 687 and 699 alcohol deaths in 2020 and 2021, respectively. However, it still represents a substantial increase in alcohol deaths from the lows seen a few years ago. In 2014, Milwaukee County recorded just 407 alcohol deaths. And, considering that the population of Milwaukee County as a whole has been in a steady decline, this means that the number of deaths is increasing even as the number of people living in the area is going down. [1]

And as bad as the situation is in Milwaukee County for people with an alcohol use disorder, it’s even worse for residents addicted to opioids. The rise in opioid-related deaths over the past few years has been especially extreme, increasing from 326 in 2019 to 522 in 2021. Preliminary data for 2022 and 2023 indicate that the county is continuing to see even more opioid deaths with each passing year. [2]

While most of the addiction cases in Milwaukee County are connected to prescription opioids, synthetic opioids like fentanyl, and alcohol, illicit street drugs are also causing an increased death rate among regular drug users. For example, Milwaukee County sees extremely high rates of death related to cocaine and heroin use, as well as instances of multi-drug cocktails. The only “popular” illicit drug that is less common in Milwaukee County is crystal meth. [3]

Naturally, it’s important to remember that the statistics for all of Milwaukee County do not just come from the city of Wauwatosa. In fact, Wauwatosa accounts for about 5% of the county population and about 8% of the total substance abuse hospitalizations and overdoses.

Substance Addiction in Wauwatosa Vs. the State of Wisconsin

Wauwatosa and the rest of Milwaukee County are among the worst in the state for substance abuse. This is especially alarming considering that Wisconsin is the worst state in the nation for alcohol abuse, with about 25% of the adult population engaging in binge drinking on a regular basis. [4] In 2021, Wisconsin recorded an average alcohol death rate of 55 per 100,000 residents, compared to 72.3 in Milwaukee County. And while this number is extremely high, Milwaukee County is just the 10th worst county in the state for alcohol-attributable deaths.

The situation is even worse when looking at the total number of alcohol hospitalizations in Milwaukee County. In 2021, the county saw 8,146 emergency room visits and 7,597 inpatient hospital visits as a result of alcohol abuse, making Milwaukee County the worst county in the state (and one of the worst counties in the country) for either figure. [5]

The outlook for opioid addiction in Milwaukee County is even worse. Statistically, an opioid abuser in Milwaukee is twice as likely to die from overdose than an opioid abuser somewhere else in the state. In 2021, Wisconsin recorded an average of 24.6 opioid deaths per 100,000 residents, compared to 54.9 in Milwaukee County. The number of opioid hospitalizations is similarly troubling, with the state recording an annual average of 53.7 emergency room visits per 100,00 residents, compared to 77 in Milwaukee County. [6]

Additionally, cocaine and heroin addiction are far more prevalent in Milwaukee County than they are in the rest of Wisconsin. On average, Wisconsin records 4.6 annual cocaine deaths per 100,000 residents, compared to 15.5 in Milwaukee County. Similarly, Wisconsin records 5.2 annual heroin deaths per 100,000 residents, while Milwaukee County records an annual average of 12.

How Wauwatosa Fights Substance Abuse & Promotes Recovery

Wauwatosa implements various programs and initiatives to fight back against addiction and help local residents recover. For example, as part of the city’s Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP), Wauwatosa has allocated more tax dollars to fight drug and alcohol abuse. Some of the programs created or enhanced through this initiative include the HALO program, which aims at harm reduction, as well as initiatives to provide free Narcan kits and fentanyl test strips. At the county level, the Milwaukee Health Department provides instructional resources and videos to help save lives during a potential overdose.

As a complement to city and county programs, Wisconsin runs the State Council on Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse (SCAODA), which manages dozens of programs and initiatives across the state. Additionally, many Mequon residents seek out help from quality inpatient rehab clinics like Wellbrook Recovery, as well as nearby detox clinics like Wellbrook Recovery.
