Therapies for Addiction and Recovery
Recovery involves more than stopping substance use. Therapy can help people better understand the thoughts, emotions, behaviors, relationships, experiences, and triggers connected to addiction while building practical skills for long-term recovery.
At Wellbrook Recovery, treatment plans may combine evidence-based behavioral therapies, individual and group counseling, trauma-focused approaches, family involvement, case management, and supportive holistic therapies. The specific combination is based on each person’s needs and treatment goals.
Therapies Used at Wellbrook Recovery
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
CBT helps clients recognize patterns in thoughts, feelings, and behaviors and develop healthier ways to respond to triggers, stress, and situations connected to substance use.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
DBT focuses on practical skills for emotional regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness, and healthier relationships and responses.
EMDR Therapy
EMDR is a trauma-focused therapy that may be used when traumatic experiences and their emotional effects are relevant to treatment and recovery.
Trauma-Informed Therapy
Trauma-informed care recognizes that past experiences can affect emotional health, relationships, coping patterns, and substance use. Treatment is approached with an understanding of that connection.
Individual Therapy
Private therapy sessions provide dedicated time to address personal challenges, underlying concerns, triggers, relationships, recovery goals, and treatment progress.
Group Therapy
Structured group sessions provide education, accountability, shared experience, feedback, and opportunities to develop and practice recovery skills with others.
Case Management
Case management helps coordinate treatment needs, practical concerns, recovery goals, and planning for the transition from formal treatment into life after care.

How Are Therapies Chosen?
Not every client receives the same therapies. The clinical team considers substance use, mental and emotional health, trauma history, recovery goals, treatment progress, and other individual needs when developing and adjusting the treatment plan.
"It might be a different type of breathing technique that you need, or just whatever helps ground you." Deep breathing. Fidgeting. Pausing to ask what's next. Small tools, real impact, a reminder from our team on getting through an anxious moment. #WellBrookRecovery #RecoveryMonth
Two states, one standard of care. In Chardon, Ohio: a close-knit community on a beautiful 7-acre property. In Brookfield, Wisconsin: elegance meets comfort, with advanced amenities and a home that doesn't feel like an institution. Different property, same idea: a place worth healing in.
Some moments change the direction of your life forever. After losing his son Seth to an overdose, Jeff johnston had to sit down with his family and tell his sons that their brother was gone. In the shock of that moment, Jeff realized he wasn’t only telling his sons what had happened. He was facing one of those rare “dad moments” where what he said next could shape how his family carried this loss forward. What came next became a defining moment for Jeff and his sons, and a message that has stayed with him ever since. Jeff shared this deeply personal story at The Light We Carry, hosted at WellBrook Recovery in Brookfield. Watch his full keynote from the event here: https://youtu.be/ImUofajCAww?si=-a5oNl7rOVLjUDtK
A few months ago, clients told us they wanted more breathing room built into the day. So we changed the schedule. Not a survey that disappears into a drawer, but an actual adjustment clients could feel by the next week. That's the kind of feedback loop we want to keep building: tell us, and watch it become real change. If you're an alum with feedback on your experience here, send us a DM. We're listening.
Dual diagnosis. Two words that can sound clinical, but the idea is simple: treating a substance use disorder alongside whatever else is going on underneath it, anxiety, depression, trauma, and more, at the same time, not one after the other. At WellBrook, that's not an add-on to the program. It's the program. Because treating one half of the picture rarely holds if the other half is still untreated.
